There are many walks starting from Ripley Green; I walked this one with the Guildford Ramblers.

The route took us past Papercourt lakes and then joined the River Wey at Papercourt Lock. We walked along the river past Pyrford Lock and the remains of Newark Priory which was one of the monastic houses that was dissolved during the reign of Henry VIII. You can see it from the path along the river but, although it’s a Grade 1 Ancient Monument, it is not open to the public.

Further along the river, we reached Walsham Lock and Weir (Ripley Weir), beside which is a stretch of river that provides a mooring for boats. A path from there leads back to Ripley Green but we continued along the river where we passed John Donne’s Summerhouse. The blue plaque on this Elizabethan house says: ‘John Donne, Poet and Dean of St. Pauls, lived here 1600-1604‘. We took the next path passed Ockham Mill, a Grade II listed family house, and it took us back to the Green
