Wednesday 17 July 2019: 10 miles — OS Route Map

I decided to join Godalming and Haslemere Ramblers for a 10 mile ramble from Witley to Hascombe. I had been wanting to try some longer walks again and, as I knew the area, I knew I could make my own way back alone if I found it to be too far. Unfortunately, OS maps connected badly to GPS on my phone and it did not track parts of the walk properly. This was not unusual at that time so I used MapMyWalk to get an outline map and to calculate the total distance of the walk.

We set off from Sweetwater Pond and made our way to Hydestile, passing the fruit farm, and then up to the car park at Hydon’s Ball where we stopped for coffee. We crossed the road into Busbridge Woods, continued towards Winkworth Arboretum and then to Hascombe, going past some impressive estates on the way. Some had lunch at the White Horse pub, while others, myself included, had brought our own food.

After lunch, we crossed the fields opposite the pub and followed the Greensand Way up a rather steep hill to Hurtwood and then to Hambledon church and round the edge of Hambledon village. When we came to the shop we stopped for afternoon tea or, in my case, ice cream. The last stretch took us over Hambledon Common, with a good view to the south, and back to the starting point at Sweetwater Pond.

The walk was quite hilly but the paths were good and I had no problem keeping up with the others. According to MapMyWalk, the total distance was 10.32 miles which is close to my adjusted route shown on OS maps.

I did not take any photos during this walk but here are some from other walks in the same area. Part of the Greensand Way coming into Hambledon can get extremely muddy in the winter.
